2006 Chapter 400 - Spring Rally Diary

It was a dark and stormy night, WAIT - that was the day before the Rally started!! Sunday dawned warm, sunny and a cloudless blue sky. Hosts Angie and Paul Thrash with co-hosts Kathy and Nick Angiolillo with Barb and Walt Frisbie ordered perfect weather. Twenty five units gathered in time to socialize before the Four O’clock began and with the help of Walt Kaiser organized us for a week of fun. Angels were introduced to our first timers, Winnie and Dean Murphy, and Darius and Emerson Henry. We than adjourned to eat at the best seafood buffet in Myrtle Beach. Tommy the Giant Crab really had a full spread and we had a private room and special group rate!

Monday Paul finally got us all on a golf course! We were treated to a very good miniature golf game, right in the middle of one of the biggest outdoor collection of shops, attractions, and eateries at Broadway at the Beach. After golf we walked, shopped, ate, and shopped some more and all found our way back to the campground in time for 4:00! Best game score was won by Ed Schuster and the Duffer trophy was given to Ginny Hoffman. Games and relaxation was in order for the rest of the day.

Tuesday was Walk to the Beach day. Some of us were content to wave good-bye to the 19 hearty souls who took the challenge. Then some went out to dinner and 33 went to the Palace Theater to see Le Grande Cirque. This was a fast moving, colorful show which really highlighted the artistic talents of very athletic performers - all thin, tall and talented.

The ladies had an elaborate luncheon at the Horry County Culinary Arts School on Wednesday. The dining room was elegant. The three, yes three, appetizers was enough for some but the entrees provided were amazing - crab cake, duck, grouper and all the fixings. Dessert was cream puff swans floating on vanilla sauce or pineapple upside down cake. There wasn’t too much said about the OFC visit to the “Library”. The Old Farts Club went to Hooters and all that was shown was a picture of Ed Schuster. To prove his youth, in spite of his Birthday, there is a picture of him with a hula hoop. I guess those “friends” around him really encouraged him.

Thursday dawned with rain but that didn’t stop this crew from going to Brookgreen Gardens. Shelter was found during a heavy downpour but most was able to enjoy the sculptures and foxgloves in bloom. Some took the house tour and others took the boat ride on the river and learned the history of the region. Fines had to be levied as both V.P. and Hosts were absent for 4:00 but Sue Straub was an able substitute.

The only planned activities for Friday and Saturday were dinners so the days were spent shopping, organizing, socializing, repairs, weighting of coaches, fixing CB’s and comparing notes on wireless setups, and mail services. It was announced that $41.00 was collected in fines by Sheriff Judy Kaiser and the closing dinner was served by volunteers at Briarcliff and was finished with strawberry short cake with delicious strawberries picked by Kathy and Nick Angiolillo. Most of us plan to meet again at the pre-rally in Maine.
